A Dissapointment!!
Well, well that was an interesting night! Cheesey rubbish and Limp Bizkit in Time and Dance music in Envy. I never really spend anytime in Envy due to not particularly likeing RnB and Hip-Hop, however I spent most of the night in there on Tuesday due the rubbish that was be played in Time. I feel especialy sorry for the people who were stood round the dance floor with miserable faces, due to dance music being played and not RnB and Hip-Hop. Personaly I would be dissapointed if I was returning to a night that I used to have so much fun at the previous year to then find they had changed it. The people with the miserable faces were all in Envy to listen to RnB and Hip-Hop and when a RnB and Hip-Hop track finally came on the faces lit up as Envy had finally returned to what they were used to and had expected of the TnE Student Night. At this time as not being a RnB and Hip-Hop fan I returned into Time to be then find some weird Sperm thing on the dance floor, trying to have some sort of competition or something on stage. My friends and myself all just thought that he was annoying and really did not need to be there, he definately put a downer on the night that eventauly led to us going home early as we were fed up with his antics. I don't know why they couldn't stick with the same style as previous years, chessey chart music till 11-11.30 dance music till 2, and they sometime but in another half hour of chessey chart about 12.30, 1 o'clock!

All in all I was dissapointed with the night, I've been going to Time and Envy's student night for coming upto fours years now and this was definately by far the worst one. Luckily Dave Pearce is playing next week which should be good, well he was last year anyway.

Well i agree with your comments on the night but as far a s the sperm man was concerned i thought that was the only bright thing on the night and was quiet funny, you obviousley do not havev a scence of humor as i was with a party of 30 people and thought it was well funny.

The music was better last year i quiet agree.

Well what can we say..........
Sorry you didnt enjoy our new Up for It Student Session, its all a case of trial an error, we did however get over 1300 people through the door and most stayed til the end so it can't have been all disappointment.
As for Super Sperm.... He was there purely for amusement factor and most people seemed to be cheering him on, its all for a laugh and aimed at pleasing the students, which the majority did seem to enjoy.
Thanks for all your comments though and they will be highlighted to the General Manager.
And we hope to see you all there for Dave Pearce next week.

Party Bear,

Thank you for your criticism, dont think it qualified as a review, as I dont think you said anything really positive in any shape or form. Generally appraisals or evaluations show strengths and weaknesses. Didnt see much positive feedback.

As for the night Im sorry you didnt enjoy however you have to remember we are trying to accomodate to the taste of several thousand students. For our new UP FOR IT student night we have tried to cover a variety of genres to ensure everybody at some point gets to hear their favourites, be it from poppy Pondlife (westlife) through to the Cheesy Spandau Ballet and on to the White Isle vibes of Tiesto and finally going urban with smooth RnB licks. With only one night to cover all of these bases we have tried to ram as much as we can into the evening giving you maximum enjoyment to your evening.

Furthermore you have to remember that with an ever changing market and music chart, Indie is becoming heavily dominant. With this in mind, it may not suit the venue, as you have become accustom to hearing the likes of Darude and Pendulum, however to those freshers starting the uni, its perfect. The Killers, Jet, Snow PAtrol etc are becoming increasingly popular and we do have to accomodate their genre.
I do agree with you to some extent as I too miss the classics of Castles In the Sky, Sandstorm etc, however the market does change and as much as I wanted it to remain in "my era" of dance anthems when I was at uni in Portsmouth, sadly it had to change then. Now times are changing.

As for Envy, we did try to provide a wide selection which clearly you did enjoy to some extent as Mr Sperm came on stage at 1.15am so you and your friends enjoyed the evenings entertainment or you would have left long before. I dont know anyone who would sit through 3 hours of music they did not like.

1300 people came to the venue with several hundred being turned away due to hitting capacity by 11.30pm! In an hour and a half we had packed the building so we must be doing something right.

As for the remaining term I ask you to give it a chance. Each week a new Dj will be taking to the decks in Time & Envy, to give a completely new spin on each weeks entertainment. Some elements from last year which you clearly enjoyed will return but again you may find the new aspects more enjoyable once you give them a go.

Please keep giving feedback

Thank you very much for your replies and the information you have provided. I apologise for implying that I did not enjoy the entire night for this was not true the first few hours my friends and I hada great time, and were just not expecting the change.

i know the main reason my group of uni m8s and I no longer visit time on a tuesday nite this year (which we did every tuesday religiously for the whole of last year) is because of the increase in cheesy music. we loved Time for its dance and the fact that a "student nite" elsewer in portsmouth was just cheese. but then towards the end of the year more and more cheese was played and we abanded it because of it.

though saying that we'll deff make an appearance for mr pearce!

well...i love cheese and dance alike. I think its good to have a change once in a while...

And the different music on Tues is (in my opinion) what seperates student night from all the other nights Time opens for.

I Love It!

although i have to say (in my opinion...again!), its the people you are with, not the music, that makes the night good or bad.

Evolution is inevitable.. and although moving on to greener pastures and unfortunatly not having the Time (no pun intended) to visit Time as often as I'd like, it must be said that music styles move on. The student night that you previously enjoyed stuck to the same formula for years (since 1998 in fact).. and was enjoyed by thousands of you, clearly something you still want to see more of.

The idea of Mr Sperm (I'm assuming based on past connections to previous Management) was just one of many costumed appearences over the last eight or nine years that have become part of a fun and healthy student night's entertainment, Mr Sperm, Batman, Tarzan, Robbie Williams all in jest, all for a giggle and usually accompanied by fun and games on stage which so many of you (through DJ's) gave positive and glowing reviews to. (No.. it wasn't me dressed as Mr Sperm, although previously in past years I was not a stranger to donning a random
costume in the aid of comedy)

At the same time.. you have to ACCEPT.. that new music and new changes are inevitable. It's a move forward and I'm sure Time have adopted these new policies by tallying up requests, e-mails and many requests from you to change, evolve, adapt.

The select few of you that have lashed back, are the first to comment, perhaps (after Dave's appearence tonight) this thread will see more positive criticisms in contrast to what has been said above.. all of which I hope being constructive in their nature. This is how Time would be helped, through your comments so fair play for making them, forwithout your comments, good, bad or otherwise - how do they know they are doing for you as customers, what it is you want.

And with the likes of Mark Hatton, Steve Tinky and co as residents, DJ's that have built a reputation upon reading a crowd and interacting with their needs, then the future can only be bright for the new look student night.

Give it a chance.. if you enjoy the change.. tell them.. if you don't, drop them a line, but do give it a try and do be vocal about your thoughts - there must be more of you with varied comments, its been a winner this long, I'm sure the legendary Southsea venue won't be doing anything but producing a top drawer night that keeps you as the customer, happy and returning regularly.
