As the next Downtown approaches (March 24th @ Wedgewood Rooms) we thought we would get into the spirit of the event, and leading up write a couple of short articles to highlight the ideals of the event, to promote the DJs and their respective promotions & events. Portsmouth has a great dance music scene and a fantastic musical history from ambient to techno, drum and bass to hip hop...

MARCH 24th - ROOM1 - THE DJS PART 1

SIMON HEARTFIELD
Simon is the resident DJ and co-promoter of Downtown, Binary Nation, Release, Phase2, and Hard Lines. A resident at SubTechment and guest at Geushky, Vurt and Technosis where he has played alongside the likes of Luke Slater, Billy Nasty, Colin Dale, Chris Finke, Umek, Alex Paterson, Darren Price, Terry Mitchell, Fabio Paras, Ian Void, Jason Swales, Mark Ambrose and the Liberator boys. He has been a producer/DJ since the year dot, released music and gigged across the UK with bands and as a solo artist, most recently his album releases Permanent Way on Hackpen Records, and the new album as the Seatman Separator trio, which has been gaing huge support. Simon is also currently recording for Under Your Nose Recordings, ElectraMento, and Techtonic Recordings.

VORTECHTRAL
Kai has been producing & performing electronic music from ambient to techno, acid to jazz, since 98, under the aliases Vortechtral, Vortechtral AM, Benni Blanco, Sequential, and Morphonix. Releases have gone out on labels in the UK, US, and in Europe, including Punch Funk, Cone Records, his own labels Techment Records, ElectraMento, In Deep Recordings, and jointly run Techtonic Recordings. Signed on the Punch Funk DJ agency, Vortechtrals high octane sound has seen him play sets and live PAs alongside massively respected DJs, including Alex Paterson (The Orb), and at events and festivals all across Europe. Since 2001 Kai setup the label and community ElectraMento. Techment Records for release of his more techno dancefloor style which has seen support from DJs across the globe, including DJ Preach, Pedro Delgardo and John Acquaviva. In Deep Recordings to release his downtempo and jazzier material, Techtonic Recordings alongside Danny P and DJ Aura, Augment Studios to engineer for labels and djs, he now runs Downtown with Si Heartfield, Hard Lines with Ian Void and Si Heartfield, and Subtechment.

IAN VOID
Ian is no stranger to the Portsmouth music scene, and a welcome name in the international techno scene, the primary driving force behind the legendary event and label Geushky, he has released on labels including Toneman, Contrast, Contaminated, Global Matador, Geushky, and Techment Records. Ian has played across the globe at various events and festivals to 100 to 25000 people alongside some the the industries biggest DJs and artists, Umek and Dave Clarke to name but two. Currently he continues to promote Geushky and his new event Hard Lines, whilst busy in the studio with productions continually rolling out, preparing the way for a possible new project on the horizon...

DANNY P
Danny P AKA Assault Systems, is the joint owner of Techtonic Recordings alongside Vortechtral and DJ Aura. Danny has played the Punch Funk stage all over the UK, he spins techno and tech house, but is more then at home playing other styles of music including electro, breaks, and electro house. Danny can also do live sets with decks fx and his own productions. He has been producing for many years and has released on labels including 32Bit Recordings and Techtonic Recordings, with many other tracks available on sites such as Acidplanet and Beatsfactory, where he is a regular face in the communities. Assault Systems has also recently gained props from world class acts such as Angel Alanis, A Squared Subsonic Recordings and Uness & Jedset.

KELLY WAINWRIGHT
Kelly has been playing records since 92 and producing properly for 1 1/2 years. He has been involved in a large variety of nights and projects including some radio stations, boat parties and beach parties. Currently he runs the event Squared which has seen host to artists and DJs including Rolando, Mr C, Ralph Lawson, and with Kevin Saunderson coming very soon. He has also played alongside a huge variety of other top artists and DJs including: Nathan Coles, Terry Francis, Eddie Richards, Robert Owens, Colin Dale, Pure Science, Rocky & Diesel, Jon Of Pleased Women, Sister Bliss, Peace Division, Aubrey, Mark Ambrose, Dave Mothersole, Asad Rizvi, and many more! Kelly has run his own record shop, and worked in many others, a lover of all kind of music from Pink Floyd to Plaid, and Moodymann to Carl Craig...
