This article is about Tidy Weekender 15 - NOW THATS WHAT I CALL A WEEKENDER! @ Pontins in Prestatyn (UK), Fri 03 Oct 2008
). Its been a while since we spoke, hows things? What have you been up to? Work, work and more work! I’ve been non-stop in the studio with both hardhouse and other projects, so have got plenty of new material finished – most of which I’m pretty excited about!
). You’re featuring quite heavily on volume 3 of Tidy’s Music Library series; the Tidy Music Library project is a new way to distribute material, do you think it will catch on? I think it will, yeah. CD releases have historically been dodgy ground for dance singles, but with the recent rise to dominance of CDJs over vinyl combined with the value offered by the Music Library discs I really think they could be a winner.
). Tell me more about the Paul Maddox Meets… quite an eclectic mix of people you’ve chosen to work with? The initial concept was to do a 4-track EP of collaborations with people I hadn’t worked with before as I though it could be a good way to get some interesting merging of styles on the go. I got a bit carried away though and ended up doing a couple more than I planned! (Thank god we didn’t have to try and fit all 6 on one 12”)
). The track you did with Rodi Style sounds quite “exotic” – can you tell me more specifically about that track? Yeah, Ben (Rodi) sent over the guitar melody we used and some really atmospheric samples, so we used those as a starting point and they seemed to lend themselves to some really big sweeping strings. We realised a few hours in though that we weren’t writing a film score so had to balance things out with a nice sizzling synth lead.
). You’ve also mixed the 2nd CD of Volume 3, a collection of old and new tracks I believe, what tracks have you included in that? There’s a couple from the new EP, a few of my more recent releases and a few of the less obvious numbers from my back catalogue that I still really like now, like “So Long” with Jon Rundell and my remix of Baby Doc & SJ’s “What You Do To Me Baby”.
). Is there likely to be a second series of Paul Maddox Meets…? If so, who is on your wish list to work with? No plans for a second instalment at the moment, but never say never!
). I hear you are off to New Zealand in September? Business or pleasure? Business (although that’s not to say it won’t be thoroughly enjoyable!). I’ve got 3 dates out there over 2 weekends, so it should be wicked. Its over 4 years since I last played there so I’m really looking forward to it.
). On your trip to New Zealand, who if you could chose anyone in the world (dead or alive) to sit next to you on your flight who would it be and what would you talk about. I always like to get as much sleep as possible on long haul flights, so someone as tedious as possible (anyone from big brother would do nicely). If I had to stay awake it would be John Peel for some in-depth education about some ridiculously obscure music.
). What else have you got in the pipeline? I’ve got my first solo release on Vicious Circle pencilled in for a couple of months time, but its waiting on me finishing the B-side at the moment! Got a few interesting ideas bubbling away in my brain somewhere too, I just need to find some time to get them out!
