Countdown to the Magna 'Revolution' - Interview with Mark EG!

This article is about The Magna Revolution One Year On @ Magna Centre in Rotherham (UK), Sat 11 Sep 2004

1. Have you been to Magna before?
Yeah, once. I remember looking into the crowd and thinking what a colourful lot they were. Everyone had made a real effort so I thought there would be trouble if I didn’t join in the party. In the end there was all out carnage anyway, so it didn’t matter. Perhaps I should have stayed outside. I remember looking in the crowd and some bloke was pulling a face like a buggered baboon – funnily enough that was my lasting memory of it all.

2. What are you most looking forward to with your next performance there?
Hopefully seeing that bloke again and having a camera to hand. No, seriously I’m well chuffed this time cause I have a real chance to bring something a little different to the table. With two sets I have an opportunity not only to do what I’d usually do in the UK but also to focus on the sound that I’m most well known for abroad in my second set – ie hard techno. Difference gets me all excited. I just hope that Magna can handle the consequences.

3.Currently, what is the most memorable venue you've played at?
Every party has something memorable to it in my eyes – even after all these years I don’t think I’ve ever come away from somewhere and thought ‘That sucked’. My favourite gig for the last month has to be the one I just played in Brazil. Pure dirty hardness in the open air at 11am on a farm in the rain forest. You almost didn’t get me back on the plane that weekend.

4.What, in your eyes, makes the ultimate gig?
The six factors that go together to make the parties I enjoy the most are: the music and the sound system (the most important), the crowd, the venue, the friendliness of the security (if there is any) and (because it all forms part of my own personal experience) the promoters. You get all these factors right and it really doesn’t matter what the hell happened before you stepped in the door.

5.Do you have anything special up your sleeve for the Magna Revolution?
Yeah hold on, lemme guess...1 stick of Blackpool rock, a Apple Mac G4 with 1Khz processor, Adam F’s Underpants, a Sony Eriksson T68i complete with Bluetooth compatibility, Sheena Easton, two dodgy Elvis impersonators, a kick up the arse and oh, some records. Alacazam!

As you know, we've based this event on a communist theme, how are you with rules? Do you often break them?

Music has taught me how to break things – rules, records, even my own bones. Music is an area I found that enables me to be myself and to stick two fingers up to those that make the rules in my life – a swift salute to the corporates. I’ve been lucky. A lot of people don’t get this chance.

6.If you we're to revolt against anything in your life or the world, what would it be? What would get you picketing outside your local town hall?
Music of course, and if someone deeply affects me, my family or anyone else important in my life.

7.What's your tune at the moment?
Way too many. I’m into so much different music.

8.What quote or favourite saying do you live your life by?
‘F**k em all’. There’s plenty more, but I’m sure you’re gonna have censors on these interviews J

9. What's your favourite kinder egg toy?
The one that comes up and tells you you’re a fool for eating this crap and then proceeds to hit you over the head with a 10 foot sausage.

10. What’s your favourite boy band?
None, they all suck.

Don't miss both of Mark's amazing sets in the Face of Steel and the Main Arena at Magna Revolution on 11th September.
