Hi Danny! Firstly, tell us about yourself and what you do when you‘re not in the DJ booth?
Well my full name is Danny Ginn and I'm 12 years old (or at least people tell me I look it) I'm from Leeds and when I'm not in the DJ booth I'm usually working the clubs as a doorman. People find this a shock at first what with me only been 5ft4 but I'm actually a white belt in karate (paid my £4.50 sign up fee) so I certainly know how to look after myself!
You're still a young spring chicken - has your music taste changed in anyway at such an early stage into your music career?
I've always been a lover of Hard Dance. I pretty much live, breath and number two the stuff. Although like most people I was influenced by the more commercial sounds at first which then brought me through to what I play today.
Who do you see as your musical influence and why?
Growing up I listened to the likes of Judge Jules, Fergie etc although I try not to be influenced to much if I'm been honest. We're in a time where everybody and their dog wants to be a DJ, so I try to stick to what feels right for me and mould my own style in the best way I can.
When you’re not DJ’ing (or working), you‘re…?
In the studio, promoting mixes/events and my profile. Its a lot of hard work building up to gigs etc and its something I have become addicted to really. I'm still only 20 so I want to take this time to work hard so I can hopefully enjoy a successful future. That kinda projects me as a workaholic which is semi true but I do enjoy going to the gym, being in clubs and pretty much anywhere that has a positive vibe about the place!
You became Radio 1's under 18 DJ of the Year and have played next to the likes of Fergie and Judge Jules to crowds of thousands. How have you progressed since then, and would you have changed anything?
Although my success with Radio 1 is a very proud time for me, my mentality now as to what it was then, has changed dramatically. I've learnt not everybody is an over night success. It takes time and effort to achieve the things you want. It gave me a great experience all the same and is something that attracts promoters/clubbers attention so its something I will always be grateful for!
You've recently become a resident for Xzilar8, a Hardstyle/HardTrance event in Knaresborough, Yorkshire. What do you enjoy most about Xzilar8?
On the night of my first gig at Xzilar8 I was really clueless as to what to expect as I'd never seen Knaresborogh as a clubbing town. But once I got behind the decks and I saw the atmosphere that was generated by the people who went, I instantly fell in love with the place. Xzilar8 has a very strong backing, with clubbers that attend the events every month. They have people dancing on bars, people in cyber, people right up at the DJ booth, its just an all round excellent party and one I strongly suggest you check out. With names such as Kutski, Anne Savage, Mark EG (to name a few) on past line ups they're definitely a brand that means business and one I'm very happy to be apart of.
Tell us about your productions and the labels you are involved with...
The past couple of months I've teamed up with hard trance producer L-E-V8 to make some fresh beats. We have put two tracks together in the shape of 'Energized and 'No Choices Left'; I'm pleased to say both will be released as an EP on 'Presence Recordings' in the not too distant future. Also we have a couple of other projects lined up before the years out but we need to work on them before any further details are released.
If you could be anything other than a DJ what would you be?
At the risk of sounding blunt...nothing. Since I was 11 years old I've wanted to be a DJ whether that be in the clubs or on the radio. The feeling it gives me when records are dropped and people are going wild is a feeling that could never be matched in other areas of life. I've done stand up comedy before and came 4th out 65 people in Radio Aire Competition whilst also doing gigs at the likes of Jonglours so I suppose I could do that!
Most enjoyable set of the year and why?
Hmm good question! I'd have to say my first gig at Xzilar8 just for the shock I was in at how bloody good it was! But also playing at Parlez Vous? Was an excellent gig, Lisa Pin Up was playing there for the first time so the place was absolutely rammed by the time I got on and the atmosphere was stupidly loud!
What about your clubbing days? When and where did they start?
At the good old legal age of 18! Its no secret I look ten years younger than my actual age so getting out prior to been 18 was never an option. I first started going to Glasshouse with old Leeds favourite GRH then he took me to a lot of his gigs and pretty much introduced me to the hard dance scene.
Where do you hope to be in 5 years time in relation to DJ’ing?
I hope to still be progressing well within the scene. The way I do things is set myself goals one by one, if I'm achieving all the goals I set in the next 5 years then I will be happy. It would be naïve for me to say I hope to be a superstar by then as I've still got a lot of platforms to fill before I can get to that status. But as long as I'm strongly involved I will see that as a good bench mark to move on from.
Describe your most embarrassing moment in the clubbing scene?
Being the guy who constantly gets asked if he's old enough to be here can be embarrassing *violins out* but I take that one on the chin!
What are your favourite tunes of the moment?
Anything by Technikal, Vandall, Kidd Kaos. But there is a lot of good music around at the moment so I'd be here for hours narrowing it down to a few!
You're booked to play for Extreme Euphoria at the mighty venue that is Magna! What other gigs/plans do you have lined up for the next few months and what can clubbers expect to see?
Yeh I'm really looking forward to Magna the venue isn't a typical club so it will be an interesting gig to say the least! I'm happy to say I'm quite busy gig wise before the years out, I will be at events such as Hi Oktane, Hard Beat Manifesto, I've got the R.A.W. Boat party which I'm really looking forward to. Of course I will be a key figure at Xzilar8, who have a massive event lined up for December in Blackpool so watch out for that!
I'm gonna keep hitting the studio getting some tracks out, but most importantly I plan to keep having fun as without that none of the above would be worth doing :0) In regards as to what to expect. I've always based my style on strong crowd interaction. I spend a lot of time with my head up analysing the crowd so I can pick the perfect tracks to drop for that time.
If you were a porn star, what would your name be?
GINN
What wise words did your Mother give you?
Work hard and you will achieve... and if you don't I will beat your little arse!!
