This article is about **Tidy @ Magna... The Homecoming!!** - 07/03/09 @ Magna Centre in Rotherham (UK), Sat 07 Mar
1. As we hurtle towards the end of another year, a good time perhaps to reflect on 2008, how has it been for you?
It has been a great year for me, while I’ve been a bit quiet on the dj front, I’ve made some fantastic progress regarding production, I should have strived to release more music I think, but I’m such a perfectionist when it comes to that side of things.
2. You played at the last Tidy Magna so you are well qualified to give those who haven’t been and are thinking of going to the March 7th event an insight… what is the venue like? Apparently it’s an old mine or something?
Lol, is it? It’s a strange venue, but in a good way, completely got character of it’s own and is huge, I find it is great for wandering about between sets and meeting random folk in the areas in between! It’s definitely not a conventional venue, but that’s why I like it!
3. What has been your favourite set of your career so far?
One of my favourites has to be when I played b2b with Lee Haslam at one of the Tidy weekenders, I can’t remember which one, but it was great, we played out our version of Carte Blanche for the first time and it took the roof off!! So that one sticks in my mind.
4. Your latest producers project features as part of the highly successful Tidy Music Library collection (part 6); “Guyver Meets…” - how did that project come about?
It was basically a follow up on what Maddox had done, and it’s a great concept, I’m always experimenting with new sounds anyways, so I was well up for it, and it’s nice to be able to do work with artists that I have never worked with before.
5. The album is effectively a collection of collaborations with some of the scenes best loved and well known DJs and producers, how did you decide who to work with?
I wanted to choose a collection of people that covered most bases, so Farley and Ben Stevens for the dirtier stuff, Sam for the funky side of things, Garbo for the tech trance edge and Amber and Rob to satisfy the big room crowds. I didn’t want the tracks to be predictable, and get the attention of people who wouldn’t necessarily play my usual stuff out.
6. Can you tell me a little about the tracks on CD01?
The tracks I think are very diverse from one another, it’s important to have some familiarity in them, but also to try something a little different, and that’s what I tried to do with most of the collabs here, the ones with Amber D and Rob T are move conventional because it was important to have that style in there, as that is what I’m more know for, although I don’t usual add singing vocals to my hard trance, Amber and Rob do, so it was nice to blend the styles together.
I think the one that will turn the most heads is “Phat Box” because it’s very different from anything else out there in the hard house scene, being that it’s inspired by speed garage!
7. Knuckle Tsunami is an interesting choice for a track name, where does the title come from?
We actually used a random track name generator for that name, we saw it and thought it was wicked, plus it sort of suits the track style.
8. Track 7 is your “Darkside Remix” of the Vinylgroover & The Red Head Pres. BB & P track The Answer – what is meant by “Darkside”?
Exactly that, I’m known for uplifting music, but I do like a bit of the darker stuff, so again, it was trying something different and with a bit more balls to it than normal.
9. Do you have a darkside that we don’t know about?
We all do, don’t we? 10. Can you tell me more about the track Guyver Unit by Riot Brothers?
One of my first releases on Tidy! It was a nice way of introducing myself to the scene, as this was before my first Guyver single, and it linked the two name together. I still play the track out and it goes down really well, I like to use it as an opening track because of the speech used in it. 11. Guyver is just one alias you have, but I know there are more, can you tell me more about each?
I have quite a few, but I’ve only used some of them a couple of times, “Kronos” is my funkier side, but I haven’t made anything like that in a long time. For my trance I use my real name “Guy Mearns”, I haven’t fully committed to this name yet though, just putting my feelers out, done a couple of remixes and had a release on Digital Remedy, though.
I had a few others aswell which where a bit pointless in the end, that I used when I set up a digital label, but I didn’t enjoy it, and it took up too much time for what I got out of it, so that journey was short lived. 12. CD02 in the pack is titled “Guyver Showcase Mix” – is this the sort of set we can expect to see at Magna? Well usually I’d play a mixture of old and new, so yeah it’s along the right lines. However, I’m playing b2b with Garbo, and he fancies doing a trance classics set, which I’m well up for, I’ve done a few trance classics sets, and I love them. I never get bored of 98/99 trance!
13. Who gives you Goosebumps? Steven Gerrard, every time he saves us in the last minute! (I’m a Liverpool fan)
14. If the Queens Speech on Christmas Day was replaced by Guyvers Speech, what topics would you include in your address to the Harder Generation for us to muse over?
I would keep it short and sweet. Just keep on raving and enjoying life, you’re only here once, do what makes you happy, look after your friends, don’t get caught up in the bad sides of the scene, and just focus on the positive.
Thanks Guy!
