Were you Magna-tized at Tidy?

I'm always up for a great club night at a wicked venue, so when I got the email about Captain Tinrib playing for Tidy at Magna back in December I just knew I had to be there!
I had never been to Magna before so that made it all the more exciting and being an old Steelworks I knew this was going to be a one-off unique clubbing experience. As time got nearer, more and more of my friends announced they were coming too, so I knew this was going to be one to remember.

It all started for me 3 months ago and I didn’t shut up about it for the 3-month long wait. In my opinion, this is the best night so far this year and one other promotions are going to find very hard to beat!

Captain Tinrib for me is a legend and someone I had play for me a few times back in 2000, someone who always rocks any venue he plays. He has written dozens of Hard House classics over his 20 years in the scene. His individual style, both musically and personally is unique. So the fact he was doing a very rare UK appearance as his Captain Tinrib LIVE show was enough to make me travel the 200 miles to this event. When I saw that Lab4 were also headlining and back together for Tidy, I thought I may just wee myself with excitement! They always put on an amazing show and one that’s never forgotten. These boys have been on the scene for 15 years plus and demand is still strong, so well done Tidy for bringing them back.

We got to the venue at 9pm and weren’t sure what to expect queue-wise, but surprisingly we walked straight in with hardly any wait, the guest lists and entrance hall were run smoothly which all helps add to the pleasurable experience on a night out.

The Red Hall certainly makes an impact when you walk in! Great place to catch up with people and get yourselves a drink.
It was great to see Claire, Gordon and some of their Contagious girls there with their stunning outfits supporting Red Nose day, well done “Red Hot Contagious!”

Guyver was on at 9 in the main room, this guy has made some amazing tracks in his time on the scene so for me he was someone I was looking forward to hearing. After eventually finding the main room, which was quite a trek from Red Hall, I grabbed a drink, which were very reasonably priced I may add, and the party began. The tune that blew the roof off the main room when he was playing was Tiesto "Urban Train", boy what a reaction, some tunes, no matter how old, just never fail to get the crowd going.

Shame we never got to hear the delights of Garbo’s set but the man was a busy guy for the whole night, so I think we can let him off!

Agnelli and Nelson versus Solarstone were next up I haven’t seen either of them play before so I was really excited about this as I love every tune they ever make! They played an awesome set and one of the best crowd reactions of the night for me was when they dropped their last tune, the place went mad!

One of the best 'versus' set of the event was BK and Technical, they rocked, but then, with some of the best production/remixes the clubbing scene has witnessed under both their belts this one was bound to be good! I asked Alf aka Technical what he thought of the night, “Sterling night from Tidy, great production and exciting to see so many up for it clubbers” Yes indeed, I second that!

I didn’t manage to see Technoboy, but from what I've heard, he was immense! That explains why my friend Wain Johnstone said “The night is all about Technoboy dropping OH MY GOD”. I first heard that tune on New Years Day when my mate Caz Wood played it out at Ministry, the place errupted!

Mark H played an absolute blinder of a set. He had everyone going mad! I love his energy and enthusiasm behind the decks, for me that’s a huge part of what its all about. Myself and my mates went a little bit mental to his set especially when he dropped Scott Fo Shaw's remix of Robin S “Show Me Love” what a tune! To end his set he played a Prodigy mash up which went down a storm!

A few of us decided to go for a wander at this point, after all, the place is huge, we didn’t want to miss anything out! We found the Kiss Da Funk arena and all I can say, is wow! What a setting for an event. This arena was in the part that still looked like a Steelworks, I've never seen anything like it, amazing and totally unique.

As if the moment couldn’t be any better Rob Tiserra dropped Love struck and the place went off! Again, a tune that will never die and always has the crowd in raptures!

Now, as I say, this place is huge, unless you have been there you cant imagine it, if you haven’t why not? If you have, you know what im talking about! There are so many places to go and so many fantastic DJs playing at this event that its impossible to see them all! I found the Face of Steel arena, and again, was blown away by the surroundings, what a place and a sound system!

I have to say at this point, boring as it may seem, that the staff, security and alike were amazing! All really friendly, helpful and worth a little mention. While you would always expect that, I've been to many places they aren’t and that can bring a downer on the night. It’s the little things like that that you remember. I was even chatting to 2 medics at the end who were also great. One was getting his first ever Tinrib hit! I think all this makes Magna a place that’s one you want to go back to. The toilets too were top notch and lots of them, all very important stuff!

So, the time arrived to end the wander and go back to the main arena where Lab4 were due to come on. In the words of Technoboy, OH MY GOD! Tidy had got the Pyro’s in for this set and my god was it explosive! The place was packed to the rafters and yes, Lab4 did what only they could, blew us away!

They had some new stuff and some of the old faves, Candyman did it for me! Some people had travelled 300 miles plus just to see them and I don’t think they disappointed! These boys are wicked and so down to earth, I asked Les and Adam to sum up what playing for Tidy at Magna “The Homecoming” meant to them:-

"I would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who came to the Magna event. Your support is so much appreciated and makes all the hard work so worthwhile. Also to the amazing team behind it all who make it all work. And of course thanks to Garbo, Sam & Sara at Tidy for pulling everything together and putting Lab4 back on the MainStage..." Les Elston (Lab4)

“For me The Homecoming was an amazing event on so many levels... It was the return of Tidy to Magna which was a very positive step for the Hard Dance scene and not only the return to the stage of Lab4, but it was also a return to the part of my relationship with Lez that was Lab4 for 12 years only this time it felt more like a celebration of all those years.
It was also the reason that Lez and I ended up back in the studio together for the first time in 3 years which was also a very inspiring and fun experience. It was without a doubt one of the high points of my career as well as one of the most relaxed and enjoyable gigs I have ever had... I can't wait for the next one !!!” Adam Newman, Lab4

Lisa Lashes was on at 4, right before Tinrib, I have to say, she was fantastic, she really worked the crowd and played some wicked tunes. I love a DJ that interacts with the crowd and she certainly did that.

Now onto the very rare UK appearance for the Captain Tinrib Tinribized show. This guy travelled halfway round the world just for this gig! He left for Sheffield on Saturday and was going back Monday, that is true dedication to his fans and Tidy! His sound is so unique and everyone who was there were completely mesmerised by him. The place rocked and the crowds’ reaction was a site to behold.

An hour is never enough for his sets and when the end came shouts out of “one more” could be heard for what sounded like forever…

So, that was the end of the night, and what a night it was! As far as lineups go, this event has pulled out all the stops and has had clubbers chatting about it for months! Lineup aside, Tidy chose a wicked venue which really has to be given massive credit too. What a place to wow your socks off. It may have been a little cold when going through the rooms, but boy the DJ’s, crowds & pyro’s certainly warmed us up!

Don’t think I'm going to stop talking about it for another 3 months!

Loved Tidy, Loved Magna, Loved the music.......Again anyone?

Very well written review - well done Kirsty xx

Thanks for comments about pix :-)

Gutted we missed Ilogik's VDJ set as had wanted to see that - how was it?

Great lineup and many people to catch up with, needed to be in too many places at once!

Sheffield was a ghost town on Sunday with hardly any shops open - was like they have different opening hours to us down South!

OH MY GOD!!!

Wicked review Kirsty! Well done babe. Magna was indeed immense! Hopefully it starts a regular return to this amazing venue. Technoboy was indeed my star of the night and I thought the music from all the dj's was spot on. One of the best nights out I have had in ages!

dint see technoboy tbh, just got in for the last tune...

was one of the better magna nites for me tbh, and i have been to most of the events there either tidy or crasher.

One of the best ones there was magna 7, that was damn good, but didnt think anything would be better than that, but this one managed it.
