For Invasions birthday bash we're very lucky as not only have we got OD404 Live, K90, Plump DJs, Jon O'bir, Superstyle Deluxe and many other spread over 4 rooms for an all night bash set to go down in history! we've also got the first ever DJ gig by the former other half of LAB4, "DJ-X", now it turns out this may be your only chgance to see Lez DJ this year as he's planning on spending most of his time producing...
The decision for Lez to come and play on invasion 5th birthday was made on a very messy Saturday evening, over a few hob nobs and a plentiful ammount of tea and coffee! Once the deal was done we got together again to ask a few questions and probe in a style true to our events...

Also K90 one of our long standing regular Invasion bookings has agreed to give an interview on Clubbed Up radio this friday (20th April). Clubbed Up are hosting our second room with Fuzzy logic on the birthday bash so you'll be able to tune in and listen to an interview and live mix form the man himself Friday 8pm on http://www.wcrfm.com/
As your all no doubt aware... Lez was the other half of LAB4, Lez and Adam split and LAB4 were no more.... now however Lez is DJing as "DJ-X" playing a style of electro described by Lez as "an electro filth from hell set!"
quote from www.dj-x.co.uk:
"DJ X (www.dj-x.co.uk), aka Lez Elston, was one half of legendary and award winning Lab4. A classically trained guitarist Lez studied music and obtained Grade 8 Associated Board Theory. He was taught by composer and concert pianist Mervin Dale who co-wrote for Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan among many others. He taught guitar practical and theory from 21.
Lez's career has focused around alternative and electronic music and production. He formed his first band Atomic in 1987. Atomic showcased for all the major record labels. CBS, Island, EMI etc and received a development deal from Polydor. In 1989 Lez left Atomic to play in various rock, goth and alternative bands. In 1990 he formed MAD with Richard Curtis (vocals) and Adam Newman (drums) - MAD played various gigs in London and Oxford.
Life long influences (artists that have had the greatest and most enduring effect on Lez): Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Al Di Meola - Friday Night In San Francisco (life changing album), John Mclaughlin, NIN, Yngwie Malmsteen and any artist who isn't scared of pushing the envolope.
So lets begin the interview:
How are you today? What time did you get out of bed? And what did you have for breakfast?
A) Got up at 8.00 am House alarm is on the blink so I had to wait for the engineer to turn up. Had slice of toast with nothing on it... followed by cup of tea and a glass of black grape juice.
I always find its best to start with something really probing! Have you ever eaten a gerbil?
A) NO BUT!!!... I did eat a maggot once for a dare..
So, as DJX what can we expect from your new DJ style? Any new production on the way from DJX? You did mention to me when we first discussed your booking "an electro filth from hell set" are you going to be sticking with the electro sound? And giving it your own sprinkling of filth fresh from the DJX studio?
A) I've got a couple of short edits of some new electro tunes i've just written up on my website. 'Dirty House Sound' & 'Go Ahead London'. As a programmer and producer its always good fun and refreshing to write in various styles. It keeps your inspiration flowing. After I did those two I was eager to write something harder. Yoji had just sent me his new 'hell19' tracks so I then got all inspired to write some nosebleed hardstyle.
Since you and Adam went your separate ways have you been taking time out? Maybe grabbing some relaxation time, holidays etc?
A) No!.. I hate relaxing... I get adgitated and bored...ha ha! I really wanted my website ready by first week in April. So Since January I've been working on that. I've also done a hardstyle collaboration with Dj Hellraiser. Started writing a more harder edge Lab4 style album and got an alternative Electro Metal project nicely underway with Si Portway called 'Overlords Of The Underground'.... we've had quite a bit of industry interest about that which is really encouraging to say the least.

The inevitable question that’s been asked by many people is how did the end of Lab4 come about? was it time for a change after spending every weekend thrashing dance floors with that individually styled Lab4 mayhem!! Had it all eventually taken its toll? Or was there a more sinister involvement with wombles and uncle Bulgaria?
A) You guest it mate...those bloody wombles......they'll stick a knife up your arse and smile at you at the same time.... you can't trust em' uncle Bulgaria..he's just a fat little crackwhore. The Lab4 thing had run its course really. We were drifting apart musically as well for sure. I think Adam was getting more into his drums and alternative projects.
I asked Matt from "2 kilos of breaks" if he had anything to ask and he came up with a very serious question for you... please take you time to answer... Do you think Eminem's "Infitine" album from '96 was the last time he was truly credible and since he associated with Dr Dre he's lost the respect of the underground?
A) I didn't really get into him until the Eminem Show album came out. The track 'White America' was the one that got me interested.. The one with the Aerosmith sample in it is really good as well,,, I'm not a huge Hip Hop or Rap fan really.
what's your favorite type of liquid?
A) Gin and Tonic...or Vodka..
Now you and Adam have both moved onto separate Djing and production projects will you be working together on any Productions as Lab4? Or maybe even Djing together?
A) Can't really see it to be quite honest.
Do you prefer squares or oblongs?
A) Triangles
Where did the name DJX come from?
A) I wanted something easy to remember. I chose X because it got four points e.g Lab4. My birthday is in April the 4 month. I love all that kind of stuff...ha ha!
Have you got man size squabs?
A) What are Squabs?
Have you ever had any bad experiences with Badgers?
A) God!! they carry TB don't they. I havn't been infected yet so I guess the answer is no I haven't.
Do you have many DJ gigs planned? Or are you planning on working more on your production as DJX? Or will you be producing under another name?
A) I plan to start dj'ing more regularly towards the latter part of the year. I want to get a big chunk of the albums written by then. If I can get 3/4 of each one out the way I'll be chipper. I'll also have written loads of brand new Hard Dance (lab4) style tunes by then.
Do you find Mark (K90) to be a little bit strange?
A) Funny you should say that....!!!!.....ha ha!!!...
You will always be remembered for your live performances and I have no doubt your Djing will end up being another successful chapter of your life, the change to Djing, have you always had a pair of decks tucked away at home or did you purchase your decks more recently once you'd decided what to do after the final curtain was closed on Lab4?
A) I've had a Technics 1210 for a couple of years and a Pioneer CD-DJ 800 as well. Then I bought a CD 1000 mk 3 and it was one of the best things I ever did. James Moss sent me some MP3 dj sets of Umek and Speedy J....its fucking metal mixing...
Are you looking forward to your debut at Invasions 5th Birthday bash??
A) I'm totally Cacking it,,, but thats what lifes all about...I'm looking forward to getting into the flow and not Cacking it,,,ha ha!
Do you know what a squab is? As we don't….
A) yep! I've just done a search on google.....Its a young ( about 4 weeks old ) domesticated pigeon that has never flown and is therefore extremely tender thus?? They weigh 1 pound apparently!...

Can we expect to see any solo live stuff from DJX?
A) NO WAY!!!... I'm sick to death of flight cases and beer soaked leads. And carrying it all. Hideous!!!
Do you know any vicars? (i would explain the reason for that question but i fear no one would unserstand and i'd be branded strange! or sick!)
A) Yes! One of dads mates is one...ha ha!. And I actually spoke to him on the phone last week, he wanted some advice on setting up a wireless network on his Macbook Pro.. ha ha ha!!!....bet that made you laugh.
Well thats concludes our interview with DJ-X (LAB4) thanks for you time Lez we apreciate it... Now any further input from Mr 90?
""I think all the Invasion boys and girls know how i feel about them and the events they put on, many a good time has been had both in the UK and Ibiza to say the least! Bring on the birthday party I say, I cant wait! Oh, and for you Mr Hubbard, you have the gaul to call me strange? This coming from a man who dresses up as half a cow, bogusly ordains himself as a vicar over the internet so he can marry people in a forest, and who's chest hair wouldn't look out of place on monkey's ballsack!!!
There you go!!"
Mark (K90)
