Angel continues this Thursday with the Grime scene’s most recent success story Skepta. Hailing from North London Skepta began his career as DJ Off key though it wasn’t long before he took his hand to the production side of music where he received much attention for one of his early releases ‘DTI’ arguably 2003’s biggest pirate anthem.
Skepta as a rapper/mc has performed all over the world: New York, Italy, Russia, Israel, Czech Rep, Sweden, Germany, Cyprus, Switzerland, Belgium, France and Amsterdam along with many other countries whilst also making the bill of UK festivals Glastonbury and V. Skepta has achieved all of this without even having an album in the shops. Having already featured on MTV Base ‘About to Blow’, graced the pages of magazines from i-D, One Week to Live to Dummy to RWD to Blues & Soul.
His main target is to make grime music ‘mainstream’ in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. So far, alongside accomplices like Wiley, Roll Deep, JME, President T, Trim, Frisco, Bossman and Big H, he has helped to increase the levels of ‘spitting’, and has produced and created grime hits such as “Duppy”, “Stupid”, “R U Dumb and “The Large Way”.
Skepta along with brother JME and grime godfather Wiley began their grime label Boy Better Know in late 2005. Early 2006 saw the release of ‘Shut Yuh Mut’ - Boy Better Know edition 1 which features all 3 artists and throughout the years has contributed and aided many other artists such as Frisco and Wiley to put out mixtapes along with JME and Skepta’s September 2007 release ‘Greatest Hits’, which was distributed nationwide.
The duo is now preparing a new album titled V.I.P. for release in late 2009 or 2010. The first single from the album, "Too Many Man (We Need More Girls in Here)", is also featured on both Wiley and Skepta's new albums. It was played on Channel AKA, MTV Base, MTV Dance and BBC 1Xtra and was recently remixed by Zinc and has been featured heavily on Radio 1’s dance music shows. “Too Many Man” is arguably one of the biggest cross over Funky / Grime tracks since Dizzee Rascal and Wiley first burst onto the scene.
Get ready for some Skanking on the dance floor.
