SOUND PROJ-X catch up with Corderoy for an interview before the forthcoming SPX Label Launch
Dale Corderoy

What was your first big breakthrough as a DJ or producer?

Ferry Corsten asking to remix Sweetest Dreams as he loved it so much when he heard is being played at Gatecrasher - gave a nice early push in the right direction.

Who are your key influences and what inspired you to DJ & produce?

DJ wise I'd have to say Pete Tong and Danny Rampling were very important to me as I started started out. Also Judge Jules was and still is a fantastic DJ, he has done nothing but support me musically all the way down the line and without question is someone I have a very high regard for as a DJ and a person.

What artists are you currently working with in the studio at the Moment

Over the last two years I have become very good friends with Dan & Phil from U4IC DJs and we have begun to collaborate on the DJ circuit and in the studio together. We're building a dance act that will be fresh and exciting, with immediate plans to go on tour giving live performances and also pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in a DJ set.

Other stuff includes working on a number of projects both in and out side the dance world. The current single ŒWatching U¹ recently come out and had some great support from a lot of DJ¹s including Radio 1¹s Dave Pearce who championed for months and it's also featured of his Ministry Of Sound Delirium compilation. Forthcoming is ŒStarline¹ & At Night in July, you can hear on the Corderoy myspace page I would love to know what people think. At the moment I have another solo two productions coming out.

Have you ever studied music?

I became classically trained on the piano at a fairly early age along side playing drums & guitar. Education wise I took A-level music but it was more to do with Elgar than spinning records so I didn't really pay much attention unfortunately and my theory grades within the course show that ;)

Your latest production is causing mayhem in Trance land at the moment, who & what were your influences on making the track?

Too many cups of coffee and burning the midnight oil is probably the truth, I tell you crazy things pop into you your head if you work long hours and that's what happened with this one. If I remember rightly I took it out to play at an early stage when I'd just started it and it worked well in the club and the crowd reacted well, but I decided it needed something else as it wasn't enough, so that night when I got back from the gig I stayed up all night ((obviously surrounded by numerous cups of coffee) and put a rocket up its arse...the track that is not mine ;) and that was that.

What are your favourite production tools and why?

Anything by Fisher Price or Tomy are the shit, all fantastic pieces of kit. Seriously, I find cubase a joy to use and I really love my virus-c (still sounds better than all the plugs) but I do love the minimonsta and predator they are truly rocking vsts.

You work along side Darren Tate & Mondo, what can we expect from the Record Label & Radio show in the forthcoming months?

There's finally going to be a new Mondo sessions compilation which we'll both be mixing, the label is focusing now on more larger projects and developing artists through events, management, djing and production. The radio show will just get funnier or not as the case may be as Darren and I continue to rip the piss whilst playing some hot music.

Trance was declared dead by the UK media several times but keeps on coming back. Where do you see the international trance scene going over the next couple of years?

Dead? ;) No I think dance music is constantly evolving and always will, it really annoys me when they say a genre is dead. This is never the case it's more like styles fall out of favour with the masses, or they have peaked and need to reinvent themselves to keep things fresh. It's been proven and if you look in the history books music styles go around in circles, I mean who would of thought Glam rock would ever make a reappearance but it did, I think trance will never be what it was in the 90s as that period was individual and special but it will resurface however as a different beast.

Which do you prefer when DJing, the energy of a massive event or theintimacy of a smaller club?

Both, if the crowd are really up for it, small or large its brilliant.

How has the Digital age made DJ'ing different?

I'm the first one to admit that I was a vinyl junkie, I have so much of the stuff, but you can't beat being able to get a tune hours before a gig and burn it and play it that night. For producers this is a dream come true as you can road test things so much easier nowadays with out the need for acetates etc etc.

What career goals do you hope to achieve in the music industry long term?

I don't want to become famous as a person but I hope one day the music I write will be.

What have you got in store for SOUND PROJX'S forthcoming Label launch Boat Party?

Loads of exclusive tunage and some records that have so much attitude I have to wear protective gloves when getting them out of the box : )
