Depth Charge, Past, Present and definately the future of Raving!

This article is about DEPTH CHARGE @ The Solent in Southampton (UK), Sat 30 Sep 2006

Starting off in 2005 Depth Charge has been a roaring success story on the Southcoast, becoming one of the most talked about Hardcore & Hard Dance boat parties around. With people travelling the length and breadth of the country to catch the unforgettable atmosphere.

The boat gives a special vibe to each party, with every event being sold out in advance guaranteeing a full house of ravers ready to start the party full throttle with no let-up until the boat docks at the end of the night.

Before every event you will be greeted by the ever increasing mass of up-for-it ravers massing at the dock gate buzzing with excitement waiting for the doors to open and the party to kick-off.

The effort that goes into these nights ensures that both floors are transformed into a true rave venue with a crystal clear pounding sound systems, lighting, lasers and UV decor. It’s easy to forget that you are actually on a boat.

There’s always a good variety of music at Depth Charge, The top deck caters for those who like their BPM counts slightly lower from Classic House and old school breakbeat hardcore to trance, hard house and hardstyle. This floor has seen appearances from some of the finest Southcoast talent, like Jon Doe, Ronnie G, Stu J and of course Depth Charge Promoter and Resident, Mittney Spears.

The lower deck caters for those that love it hardcore. Nu Skool, Old School, Breakbeat, Gabba. It’s all been played by some of the biggest names around. Brisk, Scott Brown, CLSM & Seduction have all rocked the boat.

This room is kept rocking from start to finish by the also strong line-up of highly talented residents Flatfoot Sam, Reuben Lowe, Chris Heaton, regulars Project Bosh and a whole fleet of upcoming talent. Always injecting that extra bit of energy and atmosphere to the events are Mc’s Teejay, Myst, UV & Stratton

All this is topped off by the highly energetic but friendly atmosphere created by always up for it Depth Charge ravers, many of which turn up religiously to every event, desperate for their 4 times a year Depth Charge fix.

The extra friendly security staff make sure these events run smoothly and safely and can often be seen grabbing themselves a sneaky dance... If you’re lucky you may meet Jackie Chan who makes a regular appearance to enjoy the vibe and man the door.

If you’ve never been to a Depth Charge event, make sure the next one is top of your priority list. If you've been before, you know exactly what i'm talking about. The atmosphere and party vibe is something that has to be experienced to be truly believed. The next event is on the 30th of September and sees Darren Styles & Mc Whizzkid headlining the hardcore room.

I asked the Depth Charge crew a few questions to find out more about their next event and the successes of past events:

1. Every Depth Charge so far has had an awesome atmosphere, and has been buzzing from start to finish. Do you think the boat gives something extra to a land-based club? Or is there some other Depth Charge Secret weapon that creates this magical vibe?

Reubz has got a secret weapon but it keeps going off early. No, really, the boat definitely gives an edge of excitement to the night - it's a bit more of a mission than just bowling into a club. However, we firmly believe the attitude of the promoters finds its way onto the dance floor of that night so if you put out good vibes you tend to get them back. Also, our security are spot on - they're not in your face but they're there if anyone needs them. Our sound system makes people smile too (and the gimp that runs it for us).

2. You've had a wealth of different Dj's at your events, from the big names like Scott Brown & Seduction to local boys like Project Bosh, Chris EH as well as the quality line-up of residents, does anyone leave any special memories with you? Or is each event just as special?

They've all been pretty good to be honest, both Seduction & Scott had a wicked time on the boat and loved the speed boat to & from the gig - they're well up for coming back for another party. The parties seem to just keep getting better & better. Flatty's blows his engine each time. We have a lot of familiar faces now from people who keep coming back and it's nice to have a regular crowd who know the crack.

Each and everyone has been special - the crowd verify that. Brisk played at our first hardcore launch and absolutely loved it - it'd been the first time he'd played in Southampton (his home turf) for years. He's well up for another.

3. With every party this year being sold out before the actual event, are there any plans for Depth Charge to grow in the future? Maybe a bigger boat, I'd like to see some kind of aircraft carrier or passenger ferry... hehehe

Was thinking about a submarine party, struggling to find anyone we know who has one though. We would like to do a big one off party at some point but we don't really want to do a club, we want to keep Depth Charge a bit different. Right now, we want to keep putting on decent parties four or five times a year, that people want to come back to and talk about afterwards.

4. Is there anyone you've got in mind for a future Depth Charge event or is there anyone you'd really love to see behind the Depth Charge decks? What treats are in store at the next Depth Charge?

Well we've got Styles & Whizzkid 30/09 which should be a good night. We would like to find Paul Elstak and get him to wind a set up for us. Don't even know if he still plays? Reckon Mitt's Mum should do a set as well as whilst the captain flicks her bare arse with a stick of celery.
