Goodgreef get to know KUTSKI

1) How did you first get into the scene?

I first got into the scene when I was an ickle kustki in the early 90's listening to Altern8, early Prodigy stuff etc. From there I experimented with loads of different music, but I really found direction when I got into the hardcore scene in the mid 90's. That's when I decided I had to get a piece of the action myself and saved up to get decks! As the music evolved I really got into the forward thinking stuff like Rob Vanden, Billy Bunter, Ramos etc.. then one day I heard a Bunter tape from Helter Skelter Energy '98, and it was absolutely banging!! Really chunky and groovy, hard, but a lot slower than hardcore! This was my first exposure to the underground side of Hard House! I think most people will know how the story goes from here J

2) Who has been the biggest influence on your career?

As I mentioned before, all the forward thinking, cutting edge DJ's and producers in the hard dance and hardcore scene have had a massive impact on what I've done. Bunter, Jon Doe, Sharkey and so on! Technically though, a lot of hip hop DJ's and turntablists have obviously had a really big impact on my style too! Babu, Scratch Pervs, Cash Money, Jazzy Jeff... And also a lot of experimental DJ's that push boundaries of with what should and could be expected. i.e. Z-trip, Shadow, Spinbad and all them boys!

3) You've recently become a resident at Radio 1, how did that come about and tell us more about your Residency show?

There's not actually a really good story behind how I got the show! I'd been doing my own things for years getting respect and support from the underground and making steady progress, then out the blue I got a call from Radio One saying they're doing a new show to showcase new DJ's and cutting edge dance music, and they wanted me to come down and do a pilot! I'd never done any radio before other than one interview that I hated, so basically I bricked it, but it was too big an opportunity to turn down. So I went did the pilot and they liked it and offered me a place on the show! Cashback!! I do have to Big up Jon from CLSM though, I'm sure it was his selfless effort and campaigning that led Radio One to decide to give Hard Dance and Hardcore a slot on the residency project!
On my slot of the show I cover the underground side of the hard dance and hardcore scenes! You can expect UK and Euro Hard House/Trance and Hard Style (and anything else that goes). Then up the tempo for the full range of hardcore: Vocal/happy, freeform, and feature mixes to expose different sub-genres! So far I've covered Nustyle Gabba, Drumcore (Breakbeat Hardcore), Oldskool, Up-n-Coming producers... It's all good baby ;)

4) Have you got any other interesting projects ongoing at the moment?

Yeah I have a few bits on! I've been working on a semi-live hard dance turntablist show with the Organ Donors which is gonna be tight!! We're gonna be taking that on tour at a few clubs soon!! I've not done that much production lately, but I've feeling other avenues of getting creative at the mo, so I'm just running with it and see what comes out! Watch this space!!

5) What were your highlights of 2005?

I guess it has to be getting the Radio One gig!! I doubt anything could top that 'cause things don't get that much bigger! Other good highlights where I got to travel a bit South Africa, Germany were wicked, being about to pay tribute to John Peel at the tidy weekender was good, as it was really humbling to see such respect for the big man within the hard dance clubbing community! Errrr.. what else... Yeah, I was well happy with the "Shit-Mix Tape" I did at the end of the year! That was all good fun and has got a bit of a cult status which is coo!

6) Have you any big plans for 2006?

I've got a few things on the cards, but just the usual at the mo! Keep the gigs coming, do some more stuff abroad and I could do with nailing a few festivals this year too! I find all the really good stuff that I do comes as a flash of brilliance, and the good stuff that happens comes out the blue, so I just keep my head down and work on my own crazy ideas rather than professionally planning everything out for the year! I'm sure there'll be plenty happening ;)

7) Who are your favourite DJs and producers at the moment?

DJ's: (off the top of my head) Bunter, Doe, Pavo, Catscan, Shitmat, Scotch Egg, Organ Donors, Hellfish are all good on the dance side of things. Over all genre's, Crissy Cris, Scratch Perverts, Shadow, Hype, Freestylers, Spinbad... I know I've missed loads, but there's far too many to mention!!

Producers: Gaz West (DbD), Pavo & Zany, CLSM, DERB, Walt, D-Block & S-Te-Fan, Neophyte, Vagabond... again, there are loads!!

8) What do you like to do with your spare time when not DJing?

DJ'ing is still my hobby really! If I have a weekend off I'll want to do something like a new crazy mix CD or something! Or work on some new project! Saying that though, I got a PSP last year when they came out, I thought it was just going to gather dust after a week or two, but it's quality!! If any one sees me in the services and fancies a wifi game on ridge racer, I will tan you!!!!!

9) If you hadn't of made it as a DJ what do see yourself of doing as a career?

I'm still not quite sure if I have fully made it, as I still have a full time day job as a transport planner for the council!! Ask me that in a year, and if all goes well I can say, "yeah I used to be a transport planner for the council, but that's so far behind me now I go out for five grand a set" (whist puffing on a cigar and swilling by brandy round the glass). Fingers crossed yeah?

10) You're about to make your debut at Goodgreef, what are your expectations and what have you got in store for the Goodgreef faithful?

I always intend to feel things out when playing for the first time in a club, but more often than not, if it's going off I'll go off on one! I've been to good grief as a clubber a good few times in the past and I know it will be rocking, so I'm sure I'll be able to pull out all the tricks which will be wicked! So to some things up, expect the unexpected ;)
