A History In Hindsight - Nick The Kid Talks To Frisky

This article is about HINDSIGHT presents TEN - The 10th Birthday @ Bohemia in Torquay (UK), Fri 06 Nov

Now admired far and wide for her work in hard dance both as DJ & producer, the gorgeous DJ Frisky was initially passionate about rock before discovering her love for dance music through trance and now the harder, more European sound. She's recorded with MDA & Spherical, has played at numerous and yet infamous festivals as well as a key list of blockbusting branded parties all over Europe. Her sound is hard and energetic, her look is a fashion all her own, eminating originality, much like her musical creativity and she's signed to UDJS... oh and did we mention she's gorgeous?

Nick The Kid caught up with Frisky to talk about her early beginnings, her work, her love for dance music and her forthcoming gig on Friday 6th November at Hindsight's epic tenth birthday at Bohemia Torquay, for which she stars as part of a colossal birthday celebration line-up

So where did it all start for you? What were your early experiences of underground dance music and raving! What inspired you to start DJ'ing?

It all started back in about 2000. I was 14 at the time and just about getting into dance music. I had always been into rock music all the way through school but after a friend had left a Cream CD in my house I had a listen and I was intrigued! I started attending all the free parties and the clubs that I was able to get into and it was so exciting. I was always the first person out and the last one that wanted to go home! I bought a set of decks when I was 15 and started to give it a go but it wasn’t really until I was giving a short lesson by a friend at 16 that I ‘got’ exactly what I should be doing. I think it was just the whole scene and music inspired me to start DJing, it was what I lived for, I’d finish school and couldn’t wait to find out where the party was that weekend! My first set out was at a club called the Palace in Swansea warming up for Brisk back in 2002!

Where and when was your first big break and how did it come about ?

I think it was 2007 when my first big break came about. I was even thinking of giving it up and keeping it as a hobby as I felt like nothing had really happened for me. However, Frantic booked me for Timeless and gave me a peak time slot in the girls room. A couple of weeks later I had a phonecall from their agency UDJS and they wanted to sign me. It was the week after my 21st birthday – what a great present!

You've had the opportunity to play at legendary events such as Defqon 1 & Q-Base. What is next on the international gig schedule and is there any particular gig you are looking forward to the most over the next year?

Defqon and Q-Base were two major highlights of my DJ career so far. These events just blow your mind! I am hoping to be back in Germany very soon and also have Denmark pencilled in the diary for January, but the next BIG international gig I have in the diary is Australia in May – I absolutely cannot wait for this!

This year you have teamed up in the studio with hard dance production duo MDA & SPHERICAL for an EP on Steve Hill's 'MASIF' imprint. The results have been amazing. Was this a one off project or will there be further collaborations to look forward to and in answering that, are there any other producers that you would really like to work with?

I would really love to work with MDA & Spherical again, they are so talented so I am hoping that it wasn’t a one off. I will be back in the studio with Vandall in the New Year too but I’d really love to work with someone like Zany and create something similar to the early hardstyle sound.

What does a typical week for Frisky involve?

Well at the moment I am still working full time in an office, I am going part time in January actually but on Monday – Friday you will find me sitting at my desk in work. I have also recently launched a clubwear website (clubwear.co.uk so when I come back from work you will find me dealing with that side of the business or searching for new tunes to play. The weekend you will then usually find me sleeping in the day and driving to my gigs in the night. I can't wait to drop my hours in work as it will mean I have much more time to concentrate on what I really love doing.

What are your top 5 favourite tracks of all time?

This is such a difficult question! Ok, a bit of a mixture but I would say:
Candy Staton – You Got The Love
Binary Finary - 1999
Frisky vs MDA & Spherical – I Can’t Help Myself
Analogic Disturbance – Hunting 1
Tommy Pulse - Wallah

Earlier this year, Frantic launched the Master & Servant concept with yourself and hard nrg legend Proteus playing back to back. Can you tell us more about this exciting project and what else is in the pipeline for you as a pair?

The tour was launched at Frantic’s 12th Birthday at Koko. We had been working on the whole concept for a good couple of months. We also both created our own tunes for the tour, a remix of Depeche Mode – ‘Master & Servant’, we are hoping these will be released very soon. We also had a photo shoot together and got some dancers/performers together for the launch. It really paid off and the set went really well, probably better than I would’ve imagined so it was great. The next dates we have coming up are 31st October at Storm atThe Emporium, Coalville, New Years Day at Gatecrasher for B2T and also Perth, Australia next May. I am also hoping to go out to Finland to play for Proteus’ night some time in the early New Year.

If you had to pick one career highlight, what would it be? Have there been any intense, defining moments for you so far?

I think that getting signed to UDJS was such a massive defining moment for me as they have done wonders for my career and given me the recognition I needed in places like London. However, playing at Defqon 1 was something that I wanted to do for so long so that comes in a close second!

Fashion is clearly a passion of yours with not only having your own column in dance music bible Core Magazine, but you are also launching your own clothing range as well. When and where will this be available and what can we expect to see from the Frisky range?

It feels quite strange that fashion has become such a passion for me as I was a complete tomboy in school and you would hardly ever see me with any make up on! As part of the Master & Servant tour I designed in conjunction with Contagious a ‘Frisky Fetish Range’ which involved a lot of sexy PVC outfits, all the dancers performing at Koko were all dressed in the range. It is available now at contagiousclubwear.com . I am also about to start a new clubwear range for my website (clubwear.co.uk so watch this space as they say!

How do you like to relax when you are away from the studio & your numerous gigs?

I find it quite difficult to completely relax at home as I am usually on the sofa with my laptop next to me. However, there is nothing better than chilling out with a glass of wine with some friends in the house.

You've been a relatively new addition to our lineups at Hindsight but I know you have been attending since the early days with Cally & Juice, how does is compare to other hard dance events across the country that you visit?

Yep – I have been to numerous Hindsight events with the lads! I think that the length of time you guys have been going for speaks for itself – it’s got a great following. For me, Hindsight have been at the forefront in supporting the more German/Euro sound since the beginning. I always love clubbing/playing down the South of England too as the crowd are very friendly and up for it and remind me a lot of the Welsh crowd.

You will be playing an exclusive back to back with your Welsh counterparts Cally & Juice + MC Shocker for us at Hindsight TEN, have you played back to back on many other occassions and also what can the Hindsight ravers expect on the night from the four of you?

I am really excited about this as we have never officially done this out in a club. I am sure there have been numerous occasions back at a house party where the four of us have had a jam but never out in a club. You can expect plenty of massive tuneage between the four of us, plenty of interaction and mainly watching the four of us having a hell of a laugh!

What has been your favorite Hindsight memory from the last 10 years?

Difficult to pin point one as there have been many but probably watching Uberdruck for the first time as I was a massive fan back in the day!

Finally any shouts ?

Just a massive HELLO to the Hindsight massive – myself, Cally, Juice & Shocker can’t wait to come and play for you on 6th November. It’s also Mr Juice’s Birthday on the 5th so this will be his birthday weekend, make sure you come and say Happy Birthday and buy him a drink! ;-)

See you all there for one wicked party!

With thanks to Frisky & Nick The Kid
