Q-BIC - RALPH'S BIRTHDAY BASH! - THE REVIEW
This was going to be big! Really big! As the weeks went by, there seemed to be a buzz around that this was going to be BS23’s event of the year! But after all it was Ralph’s birthday and in spectacular style, as only the Q-Bic and BS23 owner can manage! (This guy never does anything by half’s!) The line-up was released! And where else would you get SY, Darren Styles and Whizzkid, all for free! …….Q-Bic!!

We left home as the sky was turning blood red with the sunset from what was a perfect almost summer’s like day! We picked up the birthday boy early to do a few finishing touches to the club. And by 8pm there was already a queue forming outside, some of the regulars were enjoying some pre-party drinks downstairs and there was already a good buzz around the venue.
Q-Bic had moved into the function room next to BS23 for the night! And with BS23 becoming the chill out room this meant that the club now had a capacity of 350!! This night was definitely looking like it was going to need the extra room too!!
As we walked into the main room the transformation had come together perfectly! The room had been transformed Q-Bic style! The décor was just stunning with the Q-Bic signs either side of the stage area in front of the dancers podiums, the huge, luminous Q’s were hanging from the ceiling, there was uv décor and camo netting around the barriers in front of the stage. The DJ booth was up on the scaffolding and there was a VIP area behind the booth. Around the walls there were the banners for the other nights that have their home at BS23, Bassline (for all the Drum & Bass heads out there), Hybrid (our night, a mash up night of all dance music styles) and Pure Hardcore (DJA’s hardcore night).
At this point you really have to take a step back, just please take 2 minutes and realise just what is happening here! here in Weston- Super-Mare, here at BS23, here at the home of Q-Bic and the other nights that have been hatched from the BS23 womb, in 2 years we have seen nights such as Biological, Funky Dirty House, the very first Oxygen, XXX gabba night, the open deck nights were up and coming DJ’s can get to play and enjoy a system as good as the one here, as well as the nights that are involved here at the moment and the nights that are yet to come like Adrenaline and Thrillseekers. If everyone would just take a step back and realise just exactly what this club has! Maybe everyone would treat this place with the respect it most definitely deserves! I really don’t know anywhere else in all the years and in all the places that I have been over the last 15 years of being involved with the dance music scene, where you would find this much talent, this amount of nights, the amount of heart and soul that gets put into these nights, and the love for the music that everyone involved with BS23 has.

At 8.30 Mickey Brookes hit the decks, there were just hoards of people streaming through the doors, and I have never seen the response of some 100+ ravers hitting the dance floor this early! As the sounds of ‘inspiration’ and ‘lullaby’ rang through the airwaves of the club, the ravers kept on coming! There was such a good atmosphere from the very start of this night! And as MC Skinny D was hyping up the ever increasing crowd, they just kept on coming, euphoric, totally ‘up for it’ ravers just kept on coming!

By 9.30 Darren Styles and Whizzkid arrived! By this point there were nearly 350 ravers waiting in anticipation as the Raverbaby DJ/MC duo hit the stage! And what a response they got! The atmosphere was just totally electric!
Now, I have seen Darren Styles play on numerous occasions and at numerous venues but I have never seen him enjoy a set this much! He even had his phone out videoing the crowd singing along to ‘save me’ I think he was just totally overwhelmed, as we all were.
And for the next hour the anthems kept on coming, from ‘Nightmare’, ‘Jealous’ and the classic that is ‘castles in the sky’ we loved every minute! Along side Darren Styles, Whizzkid had the crowd worked up into a total frenzy; he is just the best Hardcore MC on the face of the planet! He has just a totally genuine approach to what he does; you can see this guy loves every minute of being on that stage; Hardcore just oozes from this him!

At 10.30 the Raverbaby duo left to go onto 2 other bookings that they had that night, they really looked like they were quite content to stay there and soak up this electrifying atmosphere!
Next up onto the stage was Bishop! Weston’s very own scratch miester! I just love ‘Da Bish’!! This guy is just exactly the sort of talent that comes out of BS23, talent that Weston-Super-Mare can be proud of! With his effortless mixing and his remarkable talent for scratching! Talent that I really do believe will one day rival SY’s! Mix this talent up with his choice of tunes such as ‘All I need’, ‘Report to the bassline’ and a favourite of mine at the moment a remix of the Prodigy’s ‘Everybody in the place’ then, put Vandal and Motion on the mic and you have an hour that really is the cream of the BS23 talent.

By 11.30 the ravers were still pilling in through the doors, I have never seen this place so busy! As Reegz hit the decks the floor was rammed! The corridors were rammed; BS23 was rammed to the rafters! There were people dancing everywhere, on the chairs and the tables, by the bar, in the chill area and the VIP area!....... Q-Bic was raging!!...... Everywhere there were people smiling, enjoying the night, the music, and the hardcore! Q-Bic’s newest resident Reegz didn’t disappoint, this was one of my proudest moments, my husband DJing as a resident for Q-Bic and most of all for Ralph’s birthday! The floor was just madness, the horns were blowing, the whistles were screaming as the sounds of ‘all the tears’, ‘something like this remix’ and ‘Everytime we touch’ came from the crystal system, with Trigger on the mic the crowd were still singing to the tunes, still loving the vibe that this night had created.

The time was 12.30 this was now officially Ralph’s birthday as Motion took the mic and we all sang happy birthday, as the 350+ ravers, this mass of sweaty, smiling ravers showed their appreciation for the guy who had created this night, who had created this club and who had created this –

And this is when Ralph and Outburst the B2B duo better known as HDQ had their moment! And this was HDQ at its finest! This mischievous duo were on top form, they are just shear entertainment! Their antics are becoming legendary! And even the Police arrived half way through their set, obviously hearing on the grape vine that this was a night even they had dare not miss!! And as the sounds of ‘open your eyes’ and ‘half a world’ bounced around the club’s walls, the police did a lap of the club and they left content with the fact that this was an exclusive night, with gracious, pleasant people who were having fun!
And then out of no where it was announced that the club was to be shut because of an incident that happened as the police were leaving involving a pint glass and one of the coppers! And because of this person the rest of the night was ruined for the 350 of us who were having the best night!! This I can assure you did not go down well, but as we all know there is no argument when it comes to the police.
Everyone dispersed peacefully, as we are all, the rest of us; peaceful people who wish to go out and have a good night in a club that we all love! I find this such a shame that not everyone has the same opinion and unfortunately, as with everything in life, there is always one who ruins it for the rest of us!
We headed off home 2 hours early, with a strange mixed feeling of exhilaration of having had such a good night and disappointment of the fact that it had ended so abruptly.
It was so good to have seen this place so busy and full of people having a good time! Full of ravers, proper ravers, here for the music, forgetting all about the weeks stresses and strains and just living for the weekend, to go out to dance the night away with friends in peace, love and unity! It happened, here at BS23, at Q-Bic! We all knew it was going to be big! Really big! ………And it was!

Shouts out to: Ralph! In the words of Frank Gallagher!....... “You know how to throw a part-ay!!!” thanks for a top, top night, hope you had the best birthday! And everyone else! All my ravin’ buddy’s, you all know who you are! Love you all xx
