This article is about "The Messy Weekender" @ Pavilion in York (UK), Sat 10 Oct
1.Whats the scene like in Finland at the moment. We have much smaller scene in Finland than you have in UK but still the parties are great and very lively. We have only 5 million people in whole country. The techno scene started in Finland in early nineties and was those days and still is very underground. People who come to the parties are very dedicated to the music they love and go crazy at the dance floor like people in UK.
Are you going to smash it out at the weekender?
Yeah no mercy!! We will bring it very hard at the Hardertimez!!:) I have few new own tracks that I have just finished in my studio and it will be great to play them at the Weekender! I’m really looking forward to the weekend!
What dj/producer had inspired you along your way?
My biggest influences production wise have come from Lab-4, Captain Tinrib, Karim, Mishka, Max and Amino from Alien Trax, Ruffneck, Lenny Dee and industrial band Ministry. The most inspiring djs have been Mark EG, Karim and Allen TG from Torture Garden.
How old were you when you first started djing?
I started djing when I was 17 years old and I was born in 1977 so I have been djing now 15 years. I have always worked very hard and I had my first gig outside Finland on 2000. I think that you need to always do your 110% at every gig and always trust yourself and the sound you represent and that’s why I have always stick on underground sound.
Where was your first ever gig in England?
My first gig in UK was in 2000- 2001 at Logic in London. Rubec from Logic/Tinrib had a gig in Finland 1999 and I played at the same party. I gave him my promo cd and couple of months later Nadya from Logic phoned me and asked if I could come to London tom play to one of their Logic parties. Me and my girlfriend flew To UK and we spent one week holiday and I did the gig and it went very well. When I came back to Finland there was email at my inbox from Nadya asking "Harri do you want to become our Logic resident?" I was WOW!! It was like dream come true!
Any tips for up and coming djs?
Always trust your sound and always work very hard. Never stop training technical side and give your very best at every gig. Be grateful for what you get and be noble but don’t take shit without reason. Also it’s very important if you can start to do your own production and play your own tunes at your sets. Finding own personal style can be difficult because there are million djs in the world but it’s still very important because people will remember you better then.
Any future plans you would like to tell people about?
I’m starting to write new artist album soon and it should come out before next summer. I have plans to do even more harder album than "The Nature Of The Beast" was. Also I have plans to start to organize underground warehouse parties again in Helsinki Finland. I do two other more commercial events/clubs at the moment and it would be great to get back to the roots and do some heavy underground stuff.
Any embarassing moments you can remember in your career?
Yeah ha ha!! I remember in 2000/2001 in UK when my English wasn’t very good I was talking to some guys just before my gig and I was trying to say them that "get ready for hard music or sounds" and I accidentally said "get ready for hard-on!" ha ha ha ha!! Those guys just stared at me and you could see that they were thinking who is this fucker ha ha ha!!:)
Where is the biggest event you have played at?
Well it must be Dance Valley festival in Holland or if you think the amount of people then it’s the Street Parade in Zurich Switzerland where they have hundreds of thousands of people there at the parade. Also very big ones have been Global Gathering, Defqon1, Impulz, Creamfields and Ground Zero to name few.
What cd is in your car stereo at the moment?
I don’t have car at the moment but if I would have it would be "Social Distortion: White Light White Heat White Trash". They are one of the earliest punk/blues/country cross over bands from Orange County and I love their music.
Vinyl or cd?
Both! Mixing wise vinyl because I like to do old school turntable tricks and I love the sound of vinyl and I collect lot of vinyl. Gig wise cd because nowadays it’s better to play from cd because vinyl decks are usually so bad shape/condition at the venues/dj booths that you simply can’t use them.
What is your favourite tune of the year?
"E-Noid: Order Chaos", it’s very hard and dark hardcore tune. From my own ones it would be "Black Light Discipline: For All You Heavy-hearted (Proteus Never Show Mercy Remix)".
Do you like any other styles of music other than hard dance?
Yeah I listen everything from blues to industrial and to black metal. I love Bruce Springsteen, Ministry, Social Distortion, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Dimmu Borgir, Johnny Cash, Rammstein and even Barbara Streissand ha ha ha!! Except her Christmas records are absolutely terrible ha ha ha!! It’s good to be open minded. See you all at Messy Weekender next Sat!!!
