Humm, we stick to the theory people aint up for paying more then a fiver to get into events in york. but its the only way to bring the BIG NAMES in and still have a chance of breaking even. tho gotta agree it does look a lot for the back room of the turf tavern.

Each to there own

I personally think

£5 - small venues
£10 - medium size venues
£15 - large venues
£20 + for superclubs

All though i do suppose dj line ups and added feature's might make a diffrence

If people want promoters to organise events in York with big name dj's then they must be prepared to pay the door tax no matter what it is. For example my next event is costing me around £700, so I have no choice but to ask a little bit more door tax so I can get my layout back. If not it would be pointless me putting the event on in the first place because I would be paying for everyone else to have a good night!!!!!!

Agreed. Our average expenses come to a simpilar figure, we base it on acheiveing around 120 people to break even as we dont always reach capacity, we have pushed the boat out recently! and its not payed off. so maybe the entry fee needs to be considered. the problem we have is exactly what this thread is saying, to charge £7-£8 entry fee for a pub "looks expensive" to the general public, dispite it being essential to enable the promoters to pay to host the event.
Good luck with it!! more of these type's of events can only be a good thing!!

I second that mate!

Maybe so, but all your regulars know what to expect when they come to your event and if thats the kind of event they want in York they will pay £7 - £8 door tax. Hope all goes well for ya!!!!!!

This is true, provided they understand and apreciate what they are getting for that extra money, we have noticed people dont know the difference between a local act and a big name in the drum and bass scene, so thus dont apreciate that the headline act cost £350 for example, and not just a train fair from leeds.
its a interesting debate this, any more opions, good to see this board moving again!!!

Totaly agree with all the points made on this and is well relevant to what me and bainbridge are facing at the moment, half the people that come to our nights are happy to pay a fiver to see a big name in york while the other half would prefer cheep entry with just local dj's playing.
our overheads seem to get higher every time and the next month or two will decide where we're going with the night but for now we're still going for it and are staying optermistick.
the york scene is stronger than ive ever known it and if peeps in york want it to carry on growing then there gonna have to start paying for it. some people seem to think that the people runing the nights are charging a lot for there own profit which is a load of shite, we made far more money when it was just us playing and cheap entry.

I second that mate! We just about get back what we shell out at the moment. A little bit of profit for all our promoting and organising for these events, would not be alot to ask for surely!!!!!!!!!!!!

no its not a lot to ask but they've got a point its only £5 for savaged on leeman road and thats been a longstanding event. i wud come but week before payday, not looking good, i wud be prepared to pay that if its guarenteed good line up etc, but it is a bit steep, if ur not expecting tons on people then i guess like u say u gotta charge that to break even!

Yeah, personally I dont think any night in York should charge more than £5 entry (well, small nights run in bars / pubs anyway), if you have to charge more then your spending too much on the night in the first place I reckon.

£7 for the Turf Tavern is a bit much IMO.

It's only another £2!!!! That's got to be worth it for a better line-up for everyone!

Its each to their own though isnt it mate, I personally resent paying any more than a fiver to get into a pub in York.

Impact for example, to someone whos into hardcore, £7 would be a bargain, but for me, who isnt really that into hardcore (dont get me wrong though, I still buy and listen to it, just not as into it as Hard House), £7 just seems a bit too steep! I dont follow it enough to think that the DJ's you book are worth £7. Thats just my personal opinion, obviously plenty of people are willing to pay that though, but there are also plenty of people that arent.

Horses for courses innit!

Interesting opions, and to be honest this is exactly the type of response we have had when surgesting higher entry fees to enable us to get the bigger acts in.
The simple answer is the "majority" of people aint up for paying it, some are, those who love the music and know what they are going to see!!!, but lets face it the "die hard" fan is only a small percentage of the crowds coming through the door, the rest enjoy the music, but enjoy the atmosphere and the party thats around it, its a break from toff's or the gallery, and it plays music people like, but doesn't mean they know what they are there to see and it doesn't mean they understand why your charging the price you are.
Its all about creating a balance, but thats a harder thing to achive then it sounds.
Another point to all this is venue size, york shafts us up the back side from that angle and we simply dont have the venues to bring some of the "Big Name Dj's" to york, just because we carn't sustain it on a finacial basis. its a shame, but the harder we push the music we love the more people are likly to apreciate it, its all about growing the scene, in time wwe will be able to bring the "big name hear, but everythng takes "time", leeds dnb scene for example 3 years ago was small, one or two nights running each month, now there loads on, ofter one a week, with a dedicated radio station and a number of names making an impact of the scene at large, its all achiveable, but it takes time.
Well thats my view on it anyway!!!!!

Last Foreign Beggars gig we did we had to charge £10 on the door and £7 advance, in an attempt to break even and even then we didn't despite filling the venue, sheerly because of the costs of the night (ahem...). In the future we've decided to set a fixed door tax for each event and book artists accordingly, It'd be great to get big names all the time but that ain't the reality of it. Still got some heavyweight names lined up tho... ;)

leeds dnb scene for example 3 years ago was small, one or two nights running each month

Was pretty healthy when I lived there for 5 years TBH mate.... Every thurs at Nato was a fiver and I saw LTJ Bukem, Blackmarket, Ray Keith etc.... Drum Major had big names pretty much every month, maybe more Hip Hop orientated but always a DnB room. There was a good crossover night at the windian every month (can't remember the name..). The place that's now Wire always had DnB going on. High Pressure been repping for a long time (respect!). Confused? was a fucking sick little night with live bands early on then DnB later and probably my favourite out of any of them. Nomadz have been around for ages, always with an element of DnB. There were also one-off events running at the Uni and Met with the likes of Ed Rush and Optical all the time.

Maybe it did tail off a bit about 3 or 4 years ago when I left and it's built up again. Now it's just different people running it now and very 'scene', but the base of people into DnB has always been there. Respect for what they've done tho and being able to make a living out of being in the business... That ain't easy ;)

P.S. Is Obi still involved in the Leeds tings? He was one crazy mofo that always used to start on the security at the uni when they stopped him flyering. Too much cocaine! lol
