Sven Vath hits New York
Well work was depressing so my boss said I could have a week off. So what do I do book a £180 flight to New York and go and have a rest. 4 days into it I get itchy feet and find out that Sven is playing at Cielo.

So after finding the place in the Meat Packing district, I arrive to find Sven on the door welcoming people in. $20 entry and the club is small, but a friendly atmosphere. The venue is smaller than the downstairs of the Key, with a small dance floor in the middle and private tables around the outside for the poncy bastards who never dance, but just go to clubs to look cool. It stated 300 maximum size; bullshit. There was about 4-500 at one point, I suppose that’s what you get when you book a big name DJ for such an intimate venue.

The DJ before Sven was playing some nice tech house and you could tell the place was just beginning to fill, so I took this opportunity to explore the place. Through a corridor, was a door to an outside area with a huge window looking in on the dance floor. This area was the smoking area, which I really enjoyed as I met a few locals and you didn't have to worry about anyone smoking in the main club and burning you. That is a bit hypocritical as I've probably burnt every single one of my friends in the past.

So it comes to midnight and Sven starts his 5 hour set. Musically, Sven played like he usually does; sloppy. Some of his cutting was completely out and sometimes he just didn’t even bother trying. Don't get me wrong, I love Sven's music, but standing 3 metres away from him when you have had about 3 beers and are in a club on your own, you tend to notice the mixing a lot more than you usually do!

Sven's choices of electro / tech house tunes were spot on and he certainly knew when to drop them. He used some nice vocal tunes together with some heavy bass numbers and he even pulled out some very old tunes that I haven't heard for 4 years and still managed to make them sound 'new'. He was the performer as he always is; dancing around with his shirt over his head and making a tit of himself. But let’s face it; it’s still funny watching him!

By 4 am the crowd had thinned out, which made the night a lot more enjoyable and you could actually dance. I suppose everyone had to go to work the next day it was Thursday. I called it a day at 5am and went to an American Diner with my two new pals!

If you get a chance to go to West Village in New York, go here. Check the DJ’s that are playing in May. . .

Tiesto, Sven Vath, Seb Fontaine, Louie Vega, Ame, Danny Tenaglia, Frankie Knuckles, Steve Bug, Junior Vasquez, Luciano + Digitaline, Michael Mayer + Gui Borrato, DJ Francois K Wille Graff, DJ Dixon,

I’m sorry – but that is feakin’ impressive for such a small venue in one month!! I then went to Pacha 2 days later and nobody there had even heard of this club!

A couple of my mates went too Cielo only last month and they most impressed with it as well, apparently the sound system is pretty much spot on as well.

Nice one!! You're making me wanna go to New York now! £180 for a flight there isn't too bad - as that was booked last minute, yes? Are drinks/food and living generally expensive?

Hotels are stupidly expensive, so are beers. But food, transport and clothes are well wroth going for.

I stayed in hostels for about $160 a night. The hotel I stayed in on Saturday (even though I was there for 2 hours!) was $600. Muppet moment!!!

$160 a night?!!? Was it a gold plated hostel per chance...?

That's what I was just thinking! $160 = £80 ....... must have been some high class hostel, did you have your own room?

The hotel I've booked for Ibiza is cheaper than that!

Sounds like you had fun Ross...but maybe not so much rest eh?! ;)

Staying in New York is extremely expensive...I went about three years ago and stayed in a place wiht my own room but shared bathroom in the Lower East Side and it still cost me about £400 for just under a week which was the same as spending a week in an Art Deco hotel with Ocean view in Miami!! But New York's well worth a visit and contrary to what you might expect the locals are very friendly!

Cielos a cool club, but you have to catch it on the right night.

Pachas still King though. Im from London and since moving to NYC have followed the likes of Jonathan Peters and DJ Boris.... Their parties are pretty damn good.
