PS1 was a public school from 1893 - 1963. The Institute for Contemporary Art and Resources, later P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, was founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss, as a non-profit organization dedicated to the transformation of abandoned and underutilized buildings in NYC into exhibition, performance, and studio spaces for artists.
