The music varies from great to poor. The sounds system is of average quality but often is too loud to have a conversation.. though the volume problem was not quite as bad the last time I went. Pala brands itself a "fashion bar" and displays videos sans audio of unknown runway fashion shows constantly on two TVs. The bar staff is at best indifferent and the general clientele on any night is atypical for Portland. The crowd you'll find is more like an LA scene, dressed well and snooty. If you don’t fit their idea of cool you’ll get the cold shoulder pretty quick. Not the sort of place you go if you are looking for easy conversation or jovial banter with the bar tender. The overall feel is just too pretentious for a down to earth town like Portland. The venue does have nice décor but they let décor be it’s best quality. If you are on a college student budget find another place to hang out. The food is moderate to moderate-pricey. I will say though that the various items I’ve eaten there have all been great.
